Notes for Rasmus NILSSON TYSSEN The Evanger Boka has Rasmus married about 1672, wife not known. The first child, Haldor, was born 1667, 5 years before the marriage. By tradition, Haldor, being the first born, should have inherited the farm, but he didn't. The second son Johannes, born 1672, inherited the farm, which leads me to believe that the woman Rasmus married was probably a widow, with a five year old son. Notes for Henrik OLSON FANNAES Hendrich bought the Fadnes farm from his father Ola in 1801 for 2 pd. 12mk.(?). Accommodation and support to the parents was provided by Hendrich. In 1837, Hendrich deeded the farm to his eldest son, Ole Henrikson Fadness, for 250 spd. In 1798 a son, Lars, was born to Hendrich and Barbraa Haldorsdotter, of the Horvei farm, apparently out of wedlock.. Notes for Gjertrud HENRIKSDTR FADNES Gjertrud was the only child of Henrik and Kari who did not emigrate to America. She and her husband remained in Norway. In the 1865 census Gjertrud is listed as Gjertru, and living with her son Bryngel Nilsson Mugaas on the Mugaas farm. She is categorized as a "Lægdslemkone"; wife of a pensioner on own farm, with support. Notes for Ole HENRIKSON FADNES In 1837, Ole bought a section of the Fadnes farm from his father Henrik. Accommodation and support was provided to the parents by Ole. Henrik died in 1842 and apparently left the farm to Ole. Before immigrating to America in 1846 he sold the farm "out of the family" to Helge Johnson Edal (1816-1903), for 1100. spd. (speciedaler) equivalent to 1300 US dollars (USD). That's roughly $28,000 in 1997 currency. Between 1872 and 1874 the Norwegian currency was changed from the speciedaler to the kroner. (4kr=1spd). Helge married Dortea Brynjulvsdtr Mugaas, and descendents of his still own the farm today. (Leif Haraldson took over in 1981). In 2001 the Fadnes farm includes "15 farms and lots".
Ole emigrated from Voss Norway in 1846, with his wife and two children, in company with his brother John and his wife, and brother Knud with his wife and four children. They came by sailing vessel, Kong Sverre, a "Bark", carrying about 174 passengers, departing Bergen, Norway 6 May 1846, and arriving New York, 29 June. The ship had a length of 102.5 feet, a beam width of 27.5 feet, and a depth of 16.3 feet. In 1843 the cost of passage from Bergen to New York, for one adult, was 20 Spd, equivalent, at that time, to about $25 USD,--- and passengers had to bring their own food! That's quite a challenge for an entourage of twelve, on a 7+ week journey.
In the 1850 census, Ole is listed only as "Ole Hendricksen". In the 1860 census his name is spelled "Hendrickson". In the 1880 census, he and his children have dropped the name "Hendrickson" and use the name "Fadnes", with a single "s", typically using a middle initial "H". His wife changes her name from "Syneva" in the 1850 census, to "Susan" in the 1860 census. The General Land Office Records of Wisconsin show that Ole settled on 80 acres, in the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 3, 6N (Christiana twp). (Recorded on 10 Feb 1848). On 1 Aug 1849 he filed for 40 acres in the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 34, 7N (Deerfield twp). in 1850 he filed for 80 acres in the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 31,7N. On 1 Jan 1851 he filed for 40 acres in the northeast quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 31, 7N. Eventually, he relocated to Deerfield. The 1907 History of Dane County states that "One hundred and twenty acres belonged to the original homestead but a tract of eighty acres was soon added to it and later sixty-five acres more."
Ole is 2nd cousin to Synneva.

Notes for Henrik HENRIKSON FADNES Immigrated to Koshkonong Prairie in 1845. Henrik and Kari's migration out of Voss parish, from the Fadnæs farm, was recorded on 17 Mar 1844. Their first born, Ola, was born the next day, on 18 Mar 1844. Married to second wife, Anna Knutsdtr Langeland in 1851 by Rev Preus on Koshkonong Prairie. Moved to Winneshiek, IA in 1853, and became one of the most successful and richest farmers there. He was a big and strong man. Legend has it, that Henrik had once gone out with a hunting party, to kill a bear, that had killed a man. Some of the men had guns, but Henrik did not. Suddenly, close to a small river, Henrik encountered the bear. He ran to the bear and grabbed hold of it, while shouting to the others: "Sjot no, fyr no heldu eg han!" (shoot while I am holding him!) Njaal Fadnes of Stavanger, Norway, said he read this story in a Norwegian lesebok (reader) when he first went to school, almost 50 years ago. In 1880 census of Norwegians in Iowa, he is listed as Hendrick Hendrickson. The two youngest children, Ole and Sarah, also using the last name Hendrickson, are still living with him. His second wife, Anna, died in 1872.

Notes for John HENRIKSON FADNES John Henrickson Fadnes, newly married, came to America in the spring of 1846 with his wife Anna Ivarsdatter Brunborg. They came from the parish of Voss and sailed from Bergen. They came in company with John's brothers, Ole Henrikson Fadnes, and Knud Henrikson Brunborg. The voyage aboard a sailing vessel took 7+ weeks, landing in New York City. They went by steamboat to Albany, by Erie Canal to Buffalo, and by steamboat to Milwaukee. They started walking from Milwaukee to Koshkonong Prairie. A man who lived in K.P. brought their belongings from Milwaukee by oxcart. They stayed with John's first cousin, John Haldorson Bjorgo, who settled on Section 9, of what is now Christiana township in the county of Dane, Wis, in 1841 Their mothers were Jakobsdtr sisters from the Ekse farm. In the spring of 1847, he settled on a piece of land on Section 3 of Christiana. John and Anna's 8 children were born in Christiana. John Henrikson Fadnes died 16 September 1894 in his 76th year. (Born 1822) Son Hendrick lived with his parents until he married: Brita Johannesdatter Bjorgo on 21 October 1874--Born in Voss parish (in Bergen Stift) 13 January 1849, Brita emigrated in the spring of 1871 from Bergen to Freebeck, Canada. She traveled by train from Freebeck to Lake Michigan, steamer to Milwaukee, and by train to McFarland to Mrs Ingebor Nelson's home in Deerfield. Her father died in Norway, 12 December 1896, age 96. Three brothers; Gulleik, Andres, and John immigrated in 1870, and one half-sister, immigrated to Madison, Minn. in 1859, as the wife of Ingebright Simonso, Bindingboe. Eight children were born to Mr and Mrs Hendrick J. Fadnes, including one (Anna?) 23 July 1885, Ida Jertina 13 May1891 (Died 20 September 1891) and Henry Johannes 27 February 1893. Hendrick stayed on the farm his father began and was Supervisor of the town he resides in for three years.

Notes for Andres KNUTSON FADNES A farmer in Leeds twp, Wisc. Anders and Ragnild emigrated from Voss together on 11 April 1848. In the 1850 census of Norwegians in America, Anders is given as Andrew Knudson, with two children, Rennell (Ragnilde) Andrewsen, and Engerbor Andrewsen. In the notes section of the census it gives the children as Ragnilde Andresdtr Fadnes and Ingeborg Andresdter Fadness. Anders and his family eventually moved, in 1869, to Mithcell county Iowa. He and Ragnilde are buried in Spring Prairie Lutheran cemetery.
A letter from son Andreas (Andrew) to Rev. S. O. Ylvisaker, dated 14 June 1931 says "In 1869 we (the family) moved with covered wagon and oxen to Mitchel Co., Iowa, and settled north of St Ansgar. Here they lived until their passing, forty-one years in all. They wished their remains to be brought back to Spring Prairie."

Some over 0ne-hundred years ago a family by the name of Fadness emigrated from Voss, Norway, to Spring Prairie, Wisconsin. There the family grew and prospered. Under the ministrations of Pastor H. A. Preus, one of the founders of our Norwegian Synod, a deep love for the Savior and His Gospel of grace, was created in these people. That Gospel in its truth and purity was handed down from generation to generation, so that when one of the grandsons of the original Fadness migrated to windswept prairies of Northern North Dakota, he took with him a deep love for that Gospel truth that we are justified alone by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ, without the works of the law. This man was Andrew A. Fadness. Since, for conscience reasons, he refused to enter the Norwegian church merger of 1917, where you could take your choice of believing that man was saved alone by grace or at least by some effort on his part, Andrew Fadness, together with his brother Knut, maintained for many years a Norwegian Synod preaching station at Simcoe, North Dakota. This station was served by our Synod's travelling missionary, Rev John Hendricks of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
After a long and useful life, Andrew Fadness, in the spring of 1954, entered upon that eternal rest which remains unto the people of God. Andrew Fadness, out of love to his Savior, had been a most generous supporter of olur Synod, cpontributing substantial sums of money to all departments of our Synod's work, but being responsible, in particular, for the purchase of the Kasota Valley Home.
But even before his death his works do follow to testify of his Christian faith. He willed and bequeathed his earthly goods to the work of his Savior. He remembered the Kasota Valley Home, our Synod's mission program, and our Synod's Christian Day School fund with specific bequests. The residue of his property was willed to Bethany Lutheran College and Seminary. On Sept 6 1957, Mr Laurits Houg, adminstrator of the Fadness estate, presented the college with a check for $24,323.95 and a deed to aq section of land in McHenre and McLean counties in North Dakota.
This gift has, to say the least, encouraged all of us who are interested in Bethany and it's cause. It has again revealed the power of God's Gospel to change people's lives; it has strengthened our faith in Bethany's cause, because we see the Lord's hand in providing our school wqith this magnificent gift at this particular time. It is also our hope that this gift will encourage others whom the Lord has blessed with both the Gospel and also with earthly means to follow the example of Andrew A. Fadness in giving generously to Bethany. St Paul must have been thinking of such Christians as Andrew A. Fadness when he wrote to the Corinthian congregation: "For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your seal hath provoked very many." (II Cor. 9,2)

Then Nils' son Lars took over the farm, and sold it in 1919 to Lars Askjelson Brunborg, the same man who bought the Fadnes farm 369-2 ( in Norway) in 1914.
